The Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang started in Los Angeles in the 80s by Salvadoran immigrants. The gang's main purpose was to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other gangs in LA.
National Geographic has made a documentary called World's Most Dangerous Gang, portraying MS-13.
How could I find such information on whether or not the Salvadoran government has tried to make a change? From what I know, the gang is jumping-in more and more members into their ranks everyday. I do know a few Salvadorans and from I can tell, they are far from being violent.
From my research on Guatemala these gangs also have caused a lot of problems there. I think its interesting though how these gangs transcend borders and have their hand in almost every Latin American country. I would be curious as to find out if the groups have discrimination within their own gangs based on what country they are from. For instance do Salvadorian MS13's hate Guatemalan MS13's and so on.
It always trips me out, whenever I read about a group whos original goal was to protect their people from violence, becoming violent in the process. Cool videos man.
